CMKK - Gau (CD Monotype)
You’d think a group comprising four people might together produce a sound rather more full-on than the one at work here, but when considering it includes Rutger Zuydervelt there’s probably little surprise in learning it falls close to his work under his Machinefabriek guise. Despite the inclusion of subtle guitar chimes and another laptop, the only real element that lifts this beyond is Jan Kleefstra’s softly delivered spoken word passages. As otherwise expected for a release involving Zuydervelt, the hazy driftworks, carefully planed rumbles and other vocal interludes make for an agreeable mesh of sound perfectly fine for those flickering images at the edge of our consciousness as we wake from a fantastic dream. Although I’m convinced two people could have achieved as much, this is a thoroughly warm and enticing release. RJ.
